About Our Pearls

Why are Tahitian Pearls different?

Pearls come in a wide range of colours but only Tahitian Pearls shine with the distinctive and captivating black colour we celebrate in our elegant jewellery. This mesmeric colour is produced by only one species of oyster – the Black Lip Oyster or Pinctada Margaritifera. This oyster only lives in the tropical waters around tropical Tahiti.
Our exotic pearls, cultivated for the past 30 years on our Takaroa pearl farm, reflect the absolute highest quality of Tahitian black pearl. They possess the finest natural qualities with an exquisite lustre, colour and shape.
Always authentic, entirely organic and never checmically treated or dyed, Nanihi Tahitian Pearls can live long in your family as a valued heirloom.

Where do Nanihi Tahitian Pearls come from?
Nanihi Tahitian Pearls begin life in the tropical French Polynesian waters around the tiny Tahitian atoll of Takaroa.
They are produced by Black Lip oysters, Pinctada Margaritifera. These oysters are the only species that produce these exotic gems that are distinctive in colour and have a mesmeric lustre. Cultivating each mature oyster is a slow process requiring careful expertise. It can take up to two years for an oyster to produce a single pearl, but the wait is worth it. The skilled hands of our pearl farmers produce the stunning black pearls that are a distinctive mark of luxury.

How long does it take to produce a pearl?
It takes up to two years to produce a single unique pearl. Black lip oysters, Pinctada Margaritifera, are the sole creators of our rare black pearls. Each must first be matured for two years before we even begin to cultivate them.
Expert cultivators insert a tiny bead made of oyster shell from the Mississippi River along with a piece of tissue from another oyster to begin the process.  Two years later, the perfect conditions created by the oyster produce a strong, durable and captivating black pearl.

Why do pearls come in different sizes?
Every pearl is unique, created slowly by a single oyster.  Produced organically, it is not possible to completely control the size and shape of the final pearl. Some pearls will be large and round while others may be smaller, have rings or appear with a more oval shape.  Their unique shape is part of what makes our pearls so special – each pearl is truly one-of-a-kind.

Why do some pearls have markings on them?
Nanihi Tahitian Pearls are produced by a living organism: Black Lip Oysters (Pinctada Margaritifera). This natural process can create unique markings. These blemishes are usually natural birth marks created by the oyster that formed the pearl. These are part of the authenticity of our all-natural, organic gems.

How can I be sure of the pearl quality?
Every Nanihi Tahitian Pearl undergoes the strictest of international tests before being celebrated into our jewellery. None of our pearls are dyed or altered and each one is cultivated and hand-picked from our family pearl farm in Takaroa. We pride ourselves on using only the very highest quality of pearls in all our jewellery. We’re so confident in every pearl's quality that each piece of jewellery comes with its own Certificate of Authenticity.
This Certificate of Authenticity confirms the pearl(s) in your jewellery is untreated, has its natural colour and also informs you of its exact origin.

What should I do if my jewellery needs to be repaired?
Before we send you your Nanihi Tahitian Pearls jewellery, it undergoes a thorough Quality Control process. This ensures we can be confident that you’ll receive your new jewellery in exquisite condition.
However, if you believe that your jewellery has a fault or is of an unsatisfactory quality, we will happily assess the item. This initial assessment is at our own cost (if within the 12-month warranty period) and enables us to identify whether there is a fault and, if so, what may have caused it. If a fault is discovered that is an error of materials or workmanship, we will repair or replace the item at no extra cost (if within the 12-month warranty period). If a repair is not possible, we will offer an exchange, credit note or refund.

Please note: this policy also excludes items where the pearl is not an exact match of that in the photo. All pearls are unique therefore they cannot exactly resemble another pearl.

Our warranty does not cover items damaged because of:
• misuse,
• unauthorised repairs,
• accidents,
• alterations,
• exposure to corrosive or abrasive substances,
• any other factors that exist outside of normal use.
